The father of Tabor was found guilty of tax evasion charges. His lawyer says he will file an appeal. What I am enjoying the most is for once he is minding his own business and not trying to make news every 15 minutes. I love the quiet. Keep fighting Dougie.....Looks like a two man race between Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney for the Republican nomination for President. Both can survive a loss in Florida. However had Gingrich lost in South Carolina I think Romney would have steamrolled him. Now its a brand new game.......If the economy is hurting so much how come every plane I am in travelling for the Air Force Academy is PACKED? I flew from San Diego to the Springs the other day. We left Cali at 630am and it was standing room only. Wow........Where is winter? Sorry guys. I love the snow. Its been too mild, and we need more snow in the mountains for the ski areas. I know its a hassle to drive in, but we've had nothing. Which makes you wonder if March and April, our two snowiest months of the year, will live up to their reputations.

Bowl Time

Fisher Deberry often said there's no such thing as a bad bowl. He's right, especially if you are a football coach. The Falcons are headed to a bowl. Which one is still up in the air. The Independence Bowl would love to have Air Force back. The Military Bowl had an agreement with Navy, but the midshipmen are not eligible. The Falcons appear to be an attractive alternative. For head coaches a bowl gives you about 15 extra practices to work with guys coming back next year. You also get extra exposure when it comes to recruiting and this year that's more critical than ever since Army and Navy are not bowl eligible. And if you work the dollars right you can add to the bottom line based on the bowl payout. Are some bowls more glamorous than others? No question. But for a head coach, or a senior, getting one more game is critical. I remember my last football game in HIGH SCHOOL, and I would have given anything (event today) to suit up one more time.

You can make a good argument 35 bowls is too many, and the number taints the bowl system. But that's the way things are set up. And if you are one of the 50 teams not going to a bowl, guess what? There's no such thing as a bad bowl.

All In

Saturday-last football game of the regular season. Air Force needs to beat CSU to become bowl eligible. At 7-5 the Falcons probably would get a bowl invitation. Should Air Force lose they could petition the NCAA to go to a bowl with a 6-6 record. However last year Arizona State tried the same thing and was turned down. Its been a funny season. Players were openely talking of running the table to start the year. Now, here they sit, needing a victory Saturday over a Colorado State University squad that would like nothing better than to keep the Falcons home for the holidays. Its been the year of the Turnover on Offense, and of Injuries on defense. One you can't help. The other you should be able to control.

Running back Asher Clark needs 144 yards to pass former QB Dee Dowis and become the alltime rushing leader at the Air Force Academy. Ashers performance over the years has been steady as she goes. Very solid. Its interesting because he has only had 10 100 yard rushing games in his career. Yet he''s on the verge of catching Dowis, who was simply electric every time he touched the ball. Clark has been solid and dependable, with the occasional burst like we saw Saturday, going 67 yards for a score against UNLV. If Air Force wins saturday Clark can count the upcoming bowl rushing yards toward his total. Asher, keep in mind (should the Falcons win) would have played in 4 bowl games to 1 for Dowis, and because of the change to a 12 game schedule, Clark had several more games in the regular season that Dowis. However, you still tip your cap to Clark who has been a model of consistency for the Falcons.

Playoff

Its pretty simple. Air Force has to win its last 2 Mountain West Conference games to get to 7 wins and bowl eligibility. The Falcons did it to themselves, after losing Saturday 25-17 to Wyoming. Look at how many chances Air Force had to win this game:

1) Could not score on 4th and 1 at the goal line
2) Fumbled , not once but twice deep inside Wyoming territory
3) Shrunk the playbook when Connor Dietz came in for an injured Tim Jefferson
4) Did not get the ball to playmakers Jonathen Warzeka and Mikell Hunter

Turnovers have killed the Falcons this year. These next two games are no gimmies even though both UNLV and CSU are struggling. Air Force is too, and I can imagine both the Rebels and Rams could see their games with the Falcons as a chance to make their seasons a bit more meaningful.

Air Force has backed itself into a position. They better get the boat turned around fast, otherwise this season ends on a cold night Thanksgiving weekend in Fort Collins.

3 Left

Now that the Falcons are back on track, the focus is win 2 of 3 to become bowl eligible. Might not be that easy. Wyoming comes to Colorado Springs Saturday, and the Cowboys are much improved. They too are fighting for bowl eligibility. Both Wyoming and the Falcons have to win 7 games this year for bowl eligibility because they each played and won two games against Bowl Championship Division teams. ( And I hate the fact Air Force evens plays one of those schools-Whats the benefit?) The Cowboys Quarterback Brett Smith is a freshman and has really played well. This is a team that went to San Diego and knocked off the Aztecs. And they gave TCU everything they could handle before falling in Laramie last weekend. They could give the Falcons trouble with their short passing game. Air Force has a number of injured players back on defense and you could see the difference in the 2nd half Saturday against Army. They did a much better job of getting into the gaps on the defensive line and Army had nowhere to run after that. The Falcons can win all 3 of their remaining games and go to a bowl. However, they could just as easily lose all 3.

New Mexico

On paper it looks like the Falcons have a good chance to snap their three game losing streak-On Paper. But believe me, if the Falcons eye the Lobos as a chance to get back on track, New Mexico looks at a wounded, injured Air Force team with the same eagerness, hoping to kick start their awful season. On offense the Falcons should move the ball, but turnovers again will play a key role. That's been one of the stories of this year. There's been too many and its killed Air Force and put their defense in position to defend too many short fields...The defense may see the return of Ben Kopacka up front and Chris Miller at one of the corner spots. The Falcons don't need anything fancy Saturday. Simple football-Block and Tackle, and hold onto the football. Simple recipe, in a season that's been anything but simple.

Close But No Cigar

Air Force gave Boise State a scare Saturday before losing 37-26....I thought during the week the Falcons would try and keep the ball away from the Broncos offense and that's what they did, almost to perfection. Yet for the life of me I cannot understand why, after winning the coin toss the Falcons gave the ball to the Broncos. That never will make sense to me. The weather was great, there was no wind to worry about. Why, if your game plan is to keep it away from Boise State, give it to Boise State for the first drive of the game, which resulted in a touchdown? The Falcons did not lose the game on that but there was a lot of head scratching over that decision.....Again, as it has in other games, it came down to getting the Broncos offense off the field and the Air Force defense was unable to do that....The Falcons did play better in a lot of areas, and did force two turnovers. However it all adds up to being in last place in the conference at 0-3, and having to win 4 of their last 5 to become bowl eligible. Troy Calhoun was as angry as I have ever seen him after a game, because their gameplan worked, but not enough to win the game.....Now the good news...the schedule does get easier from here on out, however-keep in mind, teams are also looking at Air Force and thinking to themselves THEIR schedule is easier with the Falcons on it because Air Force is 3-4. And the scariest game to play is one against a team that has yet to win. You never want to be the team that loses to a winless squad, and that's what New Mexico is this weekend....The Falcons are hoping to have a couple of injured players back for Saturdays game. However they have lost sophomore receiver Ty MacArthur to a broken collarbone for the rest of the regular season.

3-3

13-0 sounded great in August for the Air Force Football team. The reality of October is much different, 3-3, with injuries everywhere, and a team that's reeling. Thursday nights loss to San Diego State, 41-27, reminded us how good, and bad the Falcons can be. First, let me be clear, I laud the effort of the club and coaching staff. Troy Calhoun will fake a punt or field goal from anywhere on the field to give his team a chance to win. You can count on one hand the number of coaches around the country that have the guts Calhoun has to do that. Part of that decision making is the result of an offense that is part brilliant, and its own worst enemy with 13 turnovers in 6 games. The defense has its own challenges, giving up too many big plays and not getting enough stops, all with young guys everywhere in the lineup forced to play because of injuries. These are not excuses. But the bottom line is everybody has to play better. Air Force has to play through the issues and rise above. The season stands on edge. A winning season and a bowl is still attainable, but only if the Falcons make fewer mistakes and execute better. If not, the season will end quietly in late November in Fort Collins.

Wed 10-12-11

Get off the Field........that's what the Air Force Defense has to do. The Falcons have not been able as of late to get teams to punt. In the last 2 games (Navy and Notre Dame) those teams have punted just 3 times total. On 3rd downs those same teams are 22-36 converting to 1st downs. Not Good at all. I know Air Force is banged up, and turnovers by the offense have created short fields for the Falcons to defend, but they gotta get stops on 3rd down. Otherwise Thursday night could be another long night for the defense..

The offense has it problems as well, namely turnovers. The Falcons have turned it over 10 times in 5 games. And how many of those turnovers have come at the end of big plays by Air Force? Alot. The Falcons have a plus minus reading of -4, which is a number created when you take the number of turnovers your offense has and compare it to the number of turnovers your defense has created. In 2009 it was +22. Hold onto the football.

If Air Force can clean up those two things they have a good shot at beating San Diego State Thursday night. Our coverge begins at 4 and the kickoff is set for 6. Bring your radios out to the game

Thur 10-6 Keys to the Game

Here's what Air Force has to do to Beat Notre Dame-They must have some success rushing the football. I said SOME. The Falcons best chance will be with Tim Jefferson keeping the ball or pitching it. I think it may be tough to get any kind of yards inside. The reason I said some, is because Air Force is as good throwing the ball this year as I have seen them in quite some time. They must do that Saturday. They have to give Mikel Hunter, Zack Kauth, Jonathen Warzka and Ty Mccarthur a chance to make plays. And they have to throw on off downs, like 1-10 or 2nd and 1..

On Defense......Can they slow Cierre Wood. This cat is a stud. he ran for 191 yards versus Purdue, and as banged up as the Falcons are defensively they will need big games from a lot of people. Watch Cornerback Anthony Wright and see if he follows Wide Receiver Michael Floyd all over the field. Floyd is averaging 9 catches a game. Air Force has to force turnovers. And they must blitz Tommy Rees at quarterback. If he has a chance to sit and look The Falcons won't win

Talk to you Saturday from South Bend at 130 on Colorado's 740 KVOR.

10-3 Wow

I guess there's several ways to look at the Falcons win over Navy Saturday-You could say Air Force had to hold on because Navy was on a roll in the 4th quarter, running 36 plays and holding the ball for better than 12 minutes. You could say the Falcons dominated the game for 3 quarters and the Midshipmen were lucky to still be in it. There are those who would contest (Navy Fans) the unsportsmanlike call on Kriss Proctor after his overtime touchdown. Other (including me) counter by saying Navy could have blocked the Falcons extra point following their touchdown, or the Mids could have stopped Air Force from scoring, or Navy could have made an easy field goal in the first half they missed and the game would not have gone into overtime. But whatever you say, it was a helluva game. Air Force showed heart and spirit after Navy had tied things up. They could have folded the tent, but did not. What a game. I loved how Air Force attacked on offense. The Falcons didn't get caught in running the football and the option all the time. They called some different plays, they threw the ball, which I thought was the difference in the game. The Air Force skill guys were better than the Navy skill guys and you have to get them the ball. Jefferson, McArthur, Hunter, Warzeka, Clark, Coleman and Kauth. They need to touch it a lot every game. And the more the Falcons throw, the better their running game will be. ...Game Balls to Alex Means, Brady Amack and Harry Keys on defense....Means blocks the extra point try of Navy in overtime. He also had 12 tackles and an interception and was named Mountain West Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. Amack was named Defensive Player of the Week with a career high 23 tackles. And Keys was sensation up front with a career high 12 tackles. On offense Tim Jefferson and Asher Clark each had 2 touchdowns and Jefferson threw for a score. Tim was the Offensive Player of the Week. In games like this your stars have to play like stars and they did.

Mon 9-26 Hurtin

That describes Air Force . They are a banged up bunch. Defensive Lineman Zach Payne may be lost for the season with a knee injury. Cornerback Chris Miller has a leg injury and could be out of action a month. Tight End Joshua Freeman hurt his shoulder on a touchdown catch against Tennessee State and is questionable for the Navy Game. Brian Lindsey has another injury and may miss the game this weekend. Ken Lamendola has a hamstring injury and is also questionable. I talked to Ken after the game and congratulated him for making it all the way back. The last game he played in was October of 2009. Lamendola has been beset with various leg and knee injuries. The smile on his face was priceless. He made two tackles against Tennessee State.

Thoughts-In the Tennessee State win I liked the fact Air Force looked early and often for Mikell Hunter and Jonathen Warzeka. They have to touch the ball a lot.......Mike Dewitt has looked better than Wes Cobb at Fullback....Joshua Freeman has turned into a pretty good weapon at tight end...Anthony Lacoste has the potential to be a big time player at Air Force. He fumbled at the 1 because he had the football in his left, or inside arm and it was knocked out by State's John Jones. But later in the game he was in the open field and he made sure he switched the ball to his outside arm......Tim Jefferson under threw a few players, but still looked better passing the football....If I am Troy Calhoun, I give tailback Jonathen Lee a carry or two Saturday against Navy. He has some quicks, and will be the fastest guy on the field Saturday if they give me a shot. That 49 yard touchdown scamper was impressive....Jamil Coooks can be a star for the Falcons. Just needs playing time, and with Patrick Hennessey out, he will get it....Alex means looks like he gets better every game.....Dontae Strickland was very very good on special teams for the Falcons, with 3 tackles.

Thur 9-22

Seems like two months since Air Force last played. I hate byes, and I hate byes early in the season. Troy Calhoun told me this week he is not a big fan of byes either but he thought this one will help.....Things I will be watching for Saturday-How crisp does the Air Force offense look? How will the defense play without Ryan Gardner and Patrick Hennessey? Will the Falcons be more emotionally invested? I thought they looked flat against TCU especially early....Don't expect to see anything fancy this week from the Falcons, especially with Navy coming up next week. They will run their basic stuff and normal formations and save the exotic
sets for the Midshipmen. I do not expect Tennessee State to give Air Force much of a game. While the Tigers have been good against the run, they will have trouble against the option. And Tennessee States secondary took a beating last week against Murray State. And while Air Force doesn't throw the ball like Murray State, I think that same secondary will have its challenges with all their run responsibilities.

Tues 9-13-11

Word out of the Academy is the Falcons lose two starters following the loss to TCU. Ryan Gardner is out with a knee injury, and LB Patrick Hennessey is lost with a broken bone in his thumb. Both could be gone 8-10 weeks. This is a huge blow to this football team. I thought the Falcons rush defense was really hurt last year when Garnder missed several games with injury. Cody Miller and Nick Dejulio will see more time on the defensive line. Hennessey has been a stalwart at LB but has had injury problems throughout his career. Sounds like Jamil Cooks will slide over to replace him, which gets both Cooks and Alex Means on the field at the same time......I am not a big fan of Air Force playing Football Championship Subdivision opponents. I understand why its done but I disagree with it. I don't think it does anything to help you get ready for a bigger faster stronger D-1 team the following week. And so here we go again., with Air Force slated to play Tennessee State September 24th, followed by Navy Oct 1st. If you beat Navy then the Tennessee State game means nothing. But if you lose to the Midshipmen and somehow Tennessee State pulls the upset, it would leave the Falcons answering a lot of questions......It is a long football season, and there's no reason to panic after 2 games and 1 loss. But the season could have started under better circumstances.

Wow

I didn't expect TCU to beat Air Force like they did Saturday 35-19.....Going in I thought this was the biggest game in the last 15 years at the Academy. I think the players felt that way as well but looking back on it, you never really saw a lot of emotion from them.......I thought Troy Calhoun's call in the first quarter to go for it on 4th and 3 from the Horned Frogs 49 was a good one. You had a chance to set a tone, give your team a bit more confidence and strike early. Instead it was TCU who parlayed that into momentum and eventually a 7-0 lead.... If there was one thing that bothered me about the whole game it was the fact that Jonathen Warzeka and Mikell Hunter combined to touch the ball only 6 times. That's bad, and that's on the coaches. Both guys are talented, quick and shifty. You HAVE TO get them the ball in the open field somehow and someway. They come the closest to matching TCU's speed. 6 Times? They are two of your best skill players. GET THEM THE BALL.

Injuries.....The loss of Ryan Gardner really hurts. He is excellent against the run. The good news is I think you can get past Tennessee State without him, which gives you 3 weeks to get him ready for Navy....

Now The Big Boyi

9-5-11

Troy Calhoun will never say it, but Saturdays game against TCU is the biggest game of his head coaching career, and maybe the biggest game in the last 15 years for this program. Look, to be the man you have to beat the man, and the man is TCU. Air Force believes it can compete for the title. You can't do it unless you beat TCU. Its that simple. Calhoun, like all good coaches doesn't want one game to be seen as bigger than any other. However I think his players look at this game as a make-or break-the season contest. They have openly talked for the first time about winning the MWC Title and running the table. The fascinating part about all this is TCU. They lost to Baylor 50-48 in one of the best College games in the last 5 years. And now they get ready for Air Force, who head coach Gary Patterson respects so much he has his teams work against the option offense in early August, no matter when the teams play. The pressure is on TCU Saturday. They could start 0-2. They have a defense that has questions after getting ripped for 50 points by Baylor. Their offense is good, but young, especially at QB with Casey Pachall, and they are on the road again this week. Don't get me wrong. They are a strong team with a top 5 head coach. But they have questions for the first time in a long time. Air Force is in the best position it can be in to knock off the Horned Frogs. The Man is coming to Falcon Stadium Saturday. The Falcons hope they are the man Saturday afternoon at 445.

Game Day

9-2-11

Things to look for Saturday as Air Force hosts South Dakota.......The Coyotes quarterback Dante Warren has a big time arm, and he has 2 experienced receivers to throw to, Will Powell and Dustin Nowotny. And with a big offensive line protecting Warren, the Falcons gotta figure out how to put pressure on him.........South Dakota's defense could be in for a long day defending Air Force. You will see some different things from the Falcons, but not a lot. I am sure they would love to keep next weeks opponent, TCU, guessing.....I am looking forward to watching fullback Wes Cobb. Troy Calhoun calls him a warrior, and I imagine he could get a lot of carries tomorrow....Also, who will kick for the Falcons, Eric Soderberg or Patrick Herrngton? Heck, you may see one handle kickoffs and the other field goals. Troy Calhoun says he is not opposed to that.

Falcon Football Saturday Coverage on KVOR begins at 10. It does clear some things up when it comes to starters but keep in mind, Troy Calhoun likes to lay a lot of guys so while starting is important, the real deal is who is on the field late in the game with things on the line.

Cornerback-Josh Hall, who got good minutes last year, is the starter across from Anthony Wright. Hll beat out Chris Miller and Steffon Batts for the job. Miller will back up Hall, and Batts is listed as the backup to Wright, although you have to believe the corners can play either side of the field.

Outside Linebacker- Alex Means is listed as the starter against South Dakota. But his backup Jamil Cooks will get a ton of playing time. Also, interesting to see Ken Lamendola, who went out with a serious ankle injury early in August, is listed as #2 to Jordan Waiwaiole at inside linebacker. Lamendola, at even 75% is a very good player. Here's hoping he is injury free the rest of his senior year.

Friday Morning at 620 on KVOR join us for The Air Force Scouting Report as we look ahead to Saturdays opponent South Dakota. It sponsored by Accelerated Wealth and Midas.

Monday Mornings at 620 its Air Force Monday Morning Quarterback as we look back on Saturdays game, sponsored by Hanson Hot Springs Spas

And of course we have a new location and day for the Troy Calhoun Show. In talking to Troy Calhoun last Saturday the Air Force Coach said things will change a bit this week in practice. The team will start working against South Dakota stuff, which means the scout team offense and defense will begin to run South Dakota plays to give the 1st stringers an idea whats going on. Plus, you will see a lot more of the 1st team getting reps this week. The coaches gave the younger guys a long look the first 3 weeks.

Position battles....still up for grabs is starting cornerback, and replacing the graduated Reggie Rembert..... outside linebacker, and placekicker. 1 man's opinion-Steffon Batts could start against South Dakota at cornerback.....Eric Soderberg will be the starting placekicker, and Jamil Cooks will open the season at outside linebacker although I think Alex Means will play a lot.

We should have news later in the week on our first Coaches Show with Troy Calhoun. There are several tight position battles. At placekicker Senior Eric Soderberg is battling Junior Parker Herrington. Its been close the whole way. Soderberg had an off year a season ago. They both have strong legs and are even in the competition 2 weeks before the first game.......At cornerback somebody gets the unenviable task of replacing Reggie Rembert who is working as an assistant this year. Steffon Batts and Chris Miller have been going toe to toe. Batts may have a slight edge at the moment.....And Jamil Cooks has had a strong camp at outside linebacker and is receiving a lot of reps with the number 1 defense, over Alex Means. Both figure to get plenty of playing time.

Wed 8-10

Having watched several practices a few things have jumped out. Fullbacks Mike Dewitt and Wes Cobb make a nice 1-2 punch at that position. Dewitt is a bit bigger, but Cobb has the largest calves I have ever seen on a person. He could push a freight train with those legs...... The first week of practice has seen a lot of younger guys get reps, which is a good idea. Troy Calhoun knows what the vets can do, and the younger guys need the work and can get good instruction from it. That will begin to change at the end of this week. I think you'll see more reps from the 1st and 2nd string..... There are a number of freshman sticking their head in there and making things happen. And Troy is not afraid to play them. I think the defensive line will be a little better than people expect because Ron Burton is, in my opinion, one of the top 10 position coaches in the NATION. He spent some time in the NFL and really communicates well with his guys. 2 guys to watch for on defense, Steffen Attrice, LB, and Steffon Batts in the secondary. Big guys that can play.

2011 Here We Go

Thursday August 4th-I have been watching Air Force Football Practices for a long time and have talked to a lot of players. The Falcons opened practice Monday August 1st. I could sense a feeling of confidence from the players I haven't seen in a long time. Don't get me wrong-the guys are confident every year. But this year they are not underdogs. They are picked to finish 3rd in the conference. In the 1st USA Today College Football Coaches poll the Falcons are ranked 35th. This team, to a man, feels they have, not only a great shot at the conference championship, but an opportunity to get the rest of the country to notice them. They are loaded on both sides of the ball, although they need to find a fullback and a corner to replace Reggie Rembert. But the air of confidence from this team Monday was all over the practice field.

Here's hoping Ken Lamendola recovers quickly from what appears to be a foot injury. He was hurt Wednesday, not more than 10 yards from where I was standing. It was a non contact injury. A hush came over the team when they realized who was down. He's been trying to come back from a severe knee injury. Lamendola missed all of last year. If there's a guy who can come back its Lamendola.

We've got all your Air Force Coverage in 2011 on Colorado's 740 KVOR.

Counting Down

Word out of Atlanta is Georgia Tech Quarterback Joshua Nesbitt has still not been cleared to play in the Independence Bowl because of his broken arm. He was hurt November 4th. Clearly they are a different team without him in the lineup. If the Falcons can take away Anthony Allen, their leading ground gainer Tech will have trouble. They do not throw the ball well at all. Tech lost 4 of their last 5 and have lost 5 straight bowl games.....For The Falcons, at their last Colorado Springs practice Kevin Fogler, Brian Lindsey and Jared Tew all practiced. Getting Lindsey back would be huge because the strong safeties for both defenses are the keys to the game. They are not accounted for in option blocking schemes...Back to the offense. when Tech does throw the ball its basic stuff and they do not tend to stretch a defense. Air Force has a more complicated passing scheme and will throw deep. That might be the difference in the game. I like Air Force 31-20.

Happy Holidays

Here We Go

Air Force and Georgia Tech at the Independence Bowl!!!!! Gotta love it. Not surprised at all. It makes perfect sense. Two options teams. No secrets. Paul Johnson, the Tech coach, was head coach at Navy and really started the turnaround with the Midshipmen. And here is the fun part. There is no love lost between Air Force and Johnson. I would not call it bad blood, however, Johnson is no fan of the Falcons, and visa versa.

And Now We Wait

Our Air Force Blog is brought to you by 5 Star Bank at http://www.5starbankus.com/

Jim Arthur

After the Falcons dispatched UNLV 35-20 to finish the regular season emotions were high in the Air Force Lockeroom. 8-4 is a good season, and with a break here or there it could have been 10-2 and even 11-1. But you are what you are, and for Air Force that means bowl bound. Sounds like the Falcons will be headed to the Independence Bowl and could meet Clemson, or even Georgia Tech, which would be a great match up since the former Navy Coach Paul Johnson coaches the Ramblin Wreck. But there was some talk the Falcons could wind up back in Las Vegas to face Notre Dame. The chance is slight, but if the Fighting Irish lose to USC they would finish 6-6. The thinking is the PAC-10 who has a berth in the Vegas bowl, may not have enough teams eligible for a bowl. Notre Dame would slide in. They would love to face Air Force in this game. Again the chances are slight, but ya never know. That would be a fun game, as would an Air Force Georgia Tech match up in the Independence Bowl. So don't book tickets anywhere just yet.

UNLV

Our Air Force Blog is brought to you by 5 Star Bank at http://www.5starbankus.com/

Jim Arthur

Tues 11-16-10

Nice win by the Falcons Saturday. They did what they had to against an inferior team. Got up big, and kept New Mexico at arms length. They meet a similar team Thursday night with UNLV. Air Force may play the game without QB Tim Jefferson and WR Jonathen Warzka. Jefferson suffered a broken nose Saturday. He could have played after they cleaned it up, but I thought Troy Calhoun made a good decision to get Connor Diets in there. Dietz looked strong. He completed 5-6 passes on a late first half scoring drive and generally handled the offense well. I would keep TJ on the bench and go with Dietz Thursday night. Jonathen Warzeka suffered a concussion. With a Thursday game it might be too soon for him to be cleared to play. He too should take the night off.

The Falcons with a win would finish 8-4. Pretty solid. And with a break here or there they could have posted 9 or 10 wins. But, in coaching parlance, let's just focus on Thursday night. Our coverage on KVOR begins at 6. The Black Knights jumped out with 2 quick field goals and I said during one of the commercial breaks we got em right where we want them. You knew Air Force would come back. The biggest play of the game had nothing to do with interceptions, or fumble recoveries or even touchdowns-it was the 3rd down and 21 yard run by Nate Walker in the 2nd quarter. He got the 21 yards for the first down, setting up Tim Jefferson's first touchdown run. It was a huge play. Also, don't overlook the return of nose guard Ryan Gardner. He was a BIG factor in the Falcons slowing down the Army rushing attack. Troy Calhoun said afterwards they are a different team with Gardner in there and he played his tail off. And How bout Quarterback Tim Jefferson. he got his bell rung a few times but he was HUGE in this contest. he does what a leader has to do when times are tough-he gutted it out on a bit of a gimpy knee and played one heck of a game. That Commander In Chiefs Trophy has a case waiting for it in Colorado Springs. Home Sweet Home

2 games left in the season. Saturday at home against New Mexico and Next Thursday at UNLV. The Falcons, even giving up 5 turnovers, were still in the game. Utah had to make 2 huge 4th down stops and credit to them they did. That's what championship teams do. The Falcons found a way to climb back into it. That too, is what championship teams do. And as much as that loss to the Utes hurt, its time to get ready for Army. The last time the Commander In Chiefs trophy graced the halls of the Academy was 2002. This upcoming game has some fascinating story lines. The Black Knights are a much, much better football team, and are 1 win away from being bowl eligible. This could be the year Army beats both Air Force and Navy and wins the trophy themselves. An Air Force win gets the Falcons bowl eligible, brings the trophy back, and wipes away the longest losing streak in Troy Calhouns tenure in Colorado Springs. And it sets Air Force up for a potential 8 win regular season with struggling New Mexico and UNLV left in the season. But this game Saturday will be just as tough for the Falcons as Utah, Oklahoma and San Diego State were. It always has been. But this time, there is so much more riding on it.

And don't forget, you have a chance to win tickets to Air Force Home games by clicking on this link http://kvor.com/customform.asp?id=59180&view=scheduled

Mon 10-25

Our Air Force Blog is brought to you by 5 Star Bank at http://www.5starbankus.com/

Jim Arthur

Not a good weekend for the good guys. It's easy to see why TCU is ranked 4th this week in the BCS standings. To my eye they are better than Oklahoma. Now for the Falcons, they have to re-group and get ready for Utah. Oh yeah, the Utes are 8th in this weeks BCS standings. But the game is at Falcon Stadium and the Air Force-Utah series has produced some great games over the years both here and in Salt Lake City. But Air Force will have to play better. I thought the last two games the Falcons did not tackle as well as they had earlier this year. And, with Jared Tew out with his broken leg, they have to find more ways to get Kyle Halderman and Jonathen Warzeka involved, which may mean they need to throw more. I was surprised they only tried 7 passes after falling behind at TCU. Air Force is without fullback Jared Tew and wide receivers Kevin Fogler and Zac Kauth. And on defense the Falcons are missing safety Brian Lindsey and defensive lineman Ryan Gardner, Ben Kopacka and Wiley Wickstrom. Without Tew in the lineup I expect TCU's defense to try and take away the pitch game to Asher Clark. I believe they feel they can keep Tim Jefferson and Nathan Walker under control. Sounds like Kyle Halderman could move to the wide receiver spot to replace Kauth. I feel The Falcons will need big games from Halderman and Jonathen Warzeka to have a shot at TCU. On defense Air Force has to tackle better than they did last week against Ronnie Hillman at San Diego State. The problem is at TCU all their backs and wide receivers run like Ronnie Hillman. The Horned Frogs offense is averaging 40 points a game, and their defense is giving up 9 points a game and 1, yes 1 point a game in conference matchups. If the Falcons have a shot at winning it has to be a low scoring game. And they can't let TCU jump out early, otherwise it could be a tough hill to climb. We're lie Saturday afternoon at 4 with Falcono Football Saturday and we kick things off from Amon G Carter Stadium at 6 on Colorado's 740 KVOR.

And don't forget, you have a chance to win tickets to Air Force Home games by clicking on this link http://kvor.com/customform.asp?id=59180&view=scheduled

Mon 10-18 OUCH

Our Air Force Blog is brought to you by 5 Star Bank at http://www.5starbankus.com/

Jim Arthur

That was not a pretty game against San Diego State Saturday night. The Aztecs are better, and played well, but the Falcons didn't help their own cause. A clip on a Kyle Halderman touchdown catch, An Eric Sodaberg miss from 46 yards. Going for 2 on the Falcons first touchdown and having all sorts of confusion on the call from the bench-the decision to go for 2 to begin with, although I thought it was a good decision. And lastly the injuries to fullback Jared Tew and wide receiver Zac Kauth. It all added up to a bad, bad night all around. And now, whats next for Air Force? They play at TCU Saturday and have not played well in Fort Worth against TCU in recent memory. The Horned Frogs have team speed everywhere. Hell, even the water boys fly on and off the field. And The Horned Frogs are 5th in the BCS and have tons and tons to play for. Not that Air Force doesn't, but you know what I mean.

Later this week I'll talk more about the rushing game without Jared Tew, and the wide receiver picture with Zac Kauth going down.

And don't forget, you have a chance to win tickets to Air Force Home games by clicking on this link http://kvor.com/customform.asp?id=59180&view=scheduled

Mon 10-11

Our Air Force Blog is brought to you by 5 Star Bank at http://www.5starbankus.com/

Jim Arthur

The good news is Air Force is 5-1 and 3-0 in the Mountain West Conference after beating Colorado State. However things figure to get a tad more interesting in the next few weeks. The Falcons had 3 players go down with injuries Saturday. They lost safety Brian Lindsey to a broken clavicle for the rest of the year. He was really playing well. PJ Adeji Paul will take his place. Air Force also lost defensive linemen Ryan Gardner with a groin pull and Ben Kopacka to a knee injury. Both will miss several games. The other concern is teams have moved the ball on the ground against Air Force, teams that have not run well the entire season. Colorado State and Wyoming both had success against the Falcons rush defense. And Saturday they meet the leading rusher in the conference, Ronnie Hillman from San Diego State. He was held in check somewhat by BYU Saturday-The Aztecs, by the way, had the ball for only 15 minutes in that game-WOW, yet only lost by 3.

Other thoughts-Pick Your Poison-Do you stop Tim Jefferson, or Asher Clark, or Jared Tew? Tough call for Rocky Long the Aztecs defensive coordinator. Thats his task Saturday. The former Lobo head coach has seen the option for a long time. I wonder what he will do to try and slow it down...How bout Jonathen Warzeka. 2-100 yard Kickoff returns for touchdowns in his career and he is still only a junior? They won't kick to him Saturday. The Falcons will have to be creative to make sure he gets the ball.

And don't forget, you have a chance to win tickets to Air Force Home games by clicking on this link http://kvor.com/customform.asp?id=59180&view=scheduled

Thur 10-7

Our Air Force Blog is brought to you by 5 Star Bank at http://www.5starbankus.com/

Jim Arthur

Looks like the Falcons will be without linebacker Brady Amack for this weekends game with Colorado State. They have really relied on their young quarterback Pete Thomas, and will probably have to do so again this weekend. No surprises, so all you see is just hard hitting, gritty football. There was more pressure on Air Force in this game than I can remember in recent times. They hid it well, but the Midshipmen losing streak hung like an albatross on the Falcons. But Air Force didn't play like it, and that's why they won. They cut down on mistakes from previous weeks, and remained patient, and found a way to beat Navy 14-6. It was finally the Falcons that made a few more plays than the Midshipmen. This series has been so close over the years. I thought it was critical that Air Force get, and play with the lead, which they have hardly done in the last 4 games. A lot of heroes Saturday, but 3 stood out. Tim Jefferson, finally healthy, has been very good this year and was again yesterday with two td runs. Linebacker Jordan Waiwaiole played the game of his life with 15 tackles and the key interception with under 30 seconds to go. And how bout the freshman Jamil Cooks who blocked two kicks. He's got the makings of a very very special player for the Falcons.

The victory pushed Air Force into the top 25. They are ranked 25th in writers poll.

And don't forget, you have a chance to win tickets to Air Force Home games by clicking on this link http://kvor.com//customform.asp?id=59180&view=scheduled

Fri 10-1-10

Our Air Force Blog is brought to you by 5 Star Bank at http://www.5starbankus.com/

Jim Arthur

Had an Air Force fan say to me last night he thought this was the biggest game for the Falcons in DECADES!!!!!!! Thought about that for a while and he might be right. An Air Force win over Navy gets the 7 year monkey off the Falcons back. And it really sets them up for the potential of a BIG Season. Should the Midshipmen win, its another year of losing to Navy and now having to forget it and gear up for a difficult second half of the season. Talked to Troy Calhoun Thursday night and he said this might be the toughest schedule the Falcons have had in years. For Troy to say that is significant because he never looks ahead. But he's right. Next week an in-state rival Colorado State, then off to face much, much improved San Diego State. Then to Fort Worth to battle TCU and home at the end of October to face Utah.

Keys to Saturdays game...The Falcons defense must stop Navy on 3rd down. If they keep the ball for 6-7 minutes Navy will have the advantage...The health of Navy QB Ricky Dobbs. Has had a bum ankle. Said this week he was 91 percent (yes, 91 percent-love that from a service academy kid)..And the Falcons can't hurt themselves- Can't miss a field goal, give up a blocked punt, stupid penalties. What worries you is Air Force has battled those demons at times this year.

Bring your radios and listen to us at the Stadium Saturday on Colorado's 740 KVOR

And don't forget, you have a chance to win tickets to Air Force Home games by clicking on this link http://kvor.com//customform.asp?id=59180&view=scheduled

Monday 9-27-10

Our Air Force Blog is brought to you by 5 Star Bank at http://www.5starbankus.com/

Jim Arthur

It wasn't pretty, but it was a good, good win by Air Force at Wyoming. Why? Good football teams have to win games when they don't have their best stuff. The Falcons at times were just bad on Saturday. Penalties, a missed field goal, a field goal try with a bad snap, a fake punt that didn't work. However, when crunch time hit, the Falcons turned it on. A 16 play drive and a 14 play drive in the 4th quarter both resulted in touchdowns. Wyoming had the ball for only 9 minutes in the 2nd half. The Air Force defense shut down Running Back Alvester Alexander and Quarterback Austin Carta Samuels. And they got two big turnovers from Jon Davis, who has been named the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
The Falcon defense has not given up a point in the 4th quarter through 4 games this season. At the same time if these mistakes keep up they will cost the Falcons a game. The other thing you had to like was the rushing of Tim Jefferson. He is averaging over 6 yards a carry this year. Last year he only averaged 3.4. I asked him about it Saturday and he smiled and said, "I'm healthy this year,"

Jon Davis told me Reggie Rembert was talking to a Wyoming Wide receiver during the game. Reggie asked him, "why aren't you throwing more? The receiver looked at Reggie and said, "because of your secondary, that's why."

Air Force lost Wide Receiver Ken Fogler to a knee injury. He could miss the rest of the season. That could hurt because Fogler was so good at getting deep into the secondary.

Athletic Director Dr. Hans Mueh confirmed to KVOR Air Force will play At Notre Dame next year. That game will replace BYU on the schedule. The Fighting Irish are expected to play Air Force in Colorado Springs in 2013.

Much More to come this week as the Falcons focus on Navy. The Midshipmen were off last Saturday, giving them more time to get ready for the Falcons.

And don't forget, you have a chance to win tickets to Air Force Home games by clicking on this link http://kvor.com//customform.asp?id=59180&view=scheduled

Tues 9-22-10

Injury update...WR Kevin Fogler may miss the Wyoming game Saturday. He was hit in the head against Oklahoma and he might have a concussion.....Linebacker Harrison McWilliams has a shoulder injury and is not expected to play.....I have a feeling this game Saturday will not be close-How bout AF 37 Wyoming 13-Just a feeling......Wyoming's running game is bad, and their 3rd down percentage conversion rate is poor. That puts a lot of pressure on their QB Austin Carta-Samuels. If the Falcons can keep him in check they should be okay....I see a big day for the Air Force Offense. They have not been stopped yet and they should move the football Saturday.........Because BYU is leaving next year the Falcons have to fill one more game on their schedule. The Sooners had the nations longest winning streak at 32 games. They were ranked 7th in the nation and have big guys all over the field. However, this is why they play the games. The Falcons matched the Sooners yard for yard and hit for hit and came thisclose to winning. Oklahoma's offense is incredible. They have redefined the standard for running the no huddle. But Air Force adjusted, got their running game going, and showed an enormous amount of heart, guts and determination. I can count on one the hand the number of teams in the nation, that after being down 27-10 going into the fourth quarter, that would have the strength to make a game of it in Norman. But it's still a loss. There were no moral victories. The players were bitterly disappointed because they realized how close they came to winning. This game will help the Falcons the rest of this season. This club has a lot of weapons. Their chance of winning the Mountain West Conference title actually improved Saturday because they understand how good they can be and how far they can go.

And don't forget, you have a chance to win tickets to Air Force Home games by clicking on this link http://kvor.com//customform.asp?id=59180&view=scheduled

Thur 9-16

Our Air Force Blog is brought to you by 5 Star Bank at http://www.5starbankus.com/

Talked to Falcons head Coach Troy Calhoun this morning. Asked about injuries to Jared Tew and Asher Clark. It sounds like Clark is very questionable for Oklahoma. Calhoun said it could be a week before he's back on the field. He really didn't comment on Tew. I do know both players are on the travel roster and are SCHEDULED to go to Oklahoma. But that could change of course. We've seen coaching "gamesmenship" when it comes to injuries, so stay tuned. Both could play and then again, maybe not. Clark has a bum ankle and Tew a very sore and bruised hand.

Really looking forward to watching the Oklahoma offense vs the Air Force defense. If the Sooners get going early don't panic. The Falcons are one of the best teams in the nation at making adjustments. Its a 60 minute game. Let's see how it plays out.

Kickoff is 130 Saturday and its live on Colorado's 740 KVOR.

And don't forget, you have a chance to win tickets to Air Force Home games by clicking on this link http://kvor.com//customform.asp?id=59180&view=scheduled

Tuesday 9-14-10

Our Air Force Blog is brought to you by 5 Star Bank at http://www.5starbankus.com/

Jim Arthur

Just got off the phone with Oklahoma Coach Bob Stoops. We talked about the Oklahoma passing offense against the Air Force Defense. I think this could be the key to the game. The Sooner receivers are lightning quick, and their Quarterback Landry Jones is coming up a big time performance against Florida State. The Falcons will have to limit yards after the catch and give Jones a bunch of different looks.

Air Force brings more offensive weapons into this game than they have had in years. The Sooner defense only has 3 days to get ready for them. Should be fun to watch

Injuries...Asher Clark has a sprained ankle. Won't know til later in the week if the running back will play. And also, fullback Jared Tew has a badly bruised hand. He too could be questionable for Saturdays game. The Falcons need both of them to have a shot in Norman.

And don't forget, you have a chance to win tickets to Air Force Home games by clicking on this link http://kvor.com//customform.asp?id=59180&view=scheduled

Biggest win of the Calhoun Era

Our Air Force Blog is brought to you by 5 Star Bank at www.5starbankus.com.

By Jim Arthur

Wow...Although I was not surprised. The Falcons 35-14 win over BYU Saturday has to go down as the biggest win in the Troy Calhoun era. He won't admit it, but I saw it on his face in the locker room after the game Saturday. The Falcons were simply terrific on both sides of the ball and on special teams. Football is a game of adjustments and over the last 3 years Air Force teams have been excellent in making changes as the game develops. The defense was outstanding as they adjusted to the running of Quarterback Riley Nelson. They once again showed their ability to force turnovers, getting 3, 2 fumbles and an interception. After the 1st quarter the Falcons gave up just 126 yards of offense. And it was a total team effort....On offense, the Falcons showed they could pretty much do what they wanted. The offensive line punished the BYU defenders with over 400 yards on the ground. Asher Clark ran hard and was durable in his 100 yard plus effort. And again, the Falcons showed their big play capabilities with Jonathen Warzeka and the emerging Sophomore Mikell Hunter who already has 3 touchdowns in 2 games. And Calhouns 4th down and 2 call in the 2nd half was huge. He has been gutsy since day 1 going for it on 4th down, and Warzekas run for 6 was a back breaker.

Looking ahead... A lot of people noticed the win. The Falcons received votes in both the AP and Coaches poll, and with the victory they sit atop the conference at 1-0.......Next-Oklahoma, Saturday in Norman. The Sooners, after a closer then expected opening week victory over Utah State, pounded Florida State Saturday. But they won't have many days to get ready for the Falcons option. I expect a close game, and a low scoring game, say 13-10. Who wins? Find out Saturday at 130. Watch the game on TV and turn the volume down for your hometown coverage on Colorado's 740 KVOR.

And don't forget, you have a chance to win tickets to Air Force Home games by clicking on this link http://kvor.com//customform.asp?id=59180&view=scheduled

Thur 9-9-10

Our Air Force Blog is brought to you by 5 Star Bank at www.5starbankus.com. Reggie Rembert update-The cornerback was on the practice field Wednesday in a non contact red jersey. I think he will play Saturday. He suffered a neck injury in the win over Northwestern State and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher. He went to the hospital for tests and was back at the stadium after the game. I actually talked with him. He was with his family, and relieved his injury wasn't serious. The Academy has put him through a battery of tests already. They will make a decision on his ability to play Saturday Morning......BYU Coach Bronco Mendenhall told me he would love to continue to play Air Force after BYU leaves the Mountain West. He loves what the Academy stands for and the young men that go there....Could be a high scoring game on Saturday. I think BYU will have trouble with the Air Force Offense, and I think the Falcons will throw the ball a bit more than anyone expects....Anthony Wright was dinged up a bit last week but the cornerback will start and play..Defensive Lineman Wylie Wickstrom is out for perhaps the rest of the season with a torn knee ligament. That will hurt the Air Force depth on the defensive line....Final thought-If the Falcons win Saturday they can go back to last week and the scare Northwestern State gave them. It woke them up, and they realized you can't sleepwalk through anybody. While it wasn't pretty it will make them a better football team and here's why. I don't care who you are, trying to get up emotionally to play a game against Northwestern State is hard. And to the Demons credit they gave Air Force a game. Love their QB Paul Harris. He is a winner. At halftime the Falcons trudged into the locker room and as the players used to say about Fisher Deberry, "We heard some words they don't use in church on Sunday." A solid second half followed. This is a good wake up call.

Thoughts: I didn't think the Falcons defense put enough pressure on Harris in the first half. They blitzed more in the second half and switched up their coverages......Liked how Tim Jefferson played. He ran for two td's and threw for two. He told me afterwards he is feeling much more confident and it shows.....Bad news about losing Wylie Wikstrom to a pretty severe knee injury. We'll now see more of Bradley Connor and Caleb Koneman up front on the defensive line. Air Force looked strong on Kickoff return and punt return. Can they carry that through the rest of the season?.......Talked to Reggie Rembert after the game. He took that huge hit in the first quarter and had to be taken off on a stretcher. They released from the hospital late in the game and he was in the locker room as I was leaving. He was laughing and looked as if nothing had happened. He said he would be fine. But he will have to undergo a battery of tests for him to play this weekend.....Northwestern State moved the ball through the air against the Falcons, and look who's coming to town this week. BYU. Defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstedt will have to correct some things, and definitely bring more pressure earlier against QB's Riley Nelson and Jake Heaps. Both played in the win over Washington.....Saturdays game, in my opinion, is the biggest game in the Troy Calhoun era....More on that later this week. Bradley Dale Peaveto the Demons coach was co-defensive coordinator at LSU when the tigers shut down Georgia Tech and their option attack in the Chick Fil-A bowl in 2009 38-3. Also, former Nichols State Coach Jay Thomas who faced Air Force last year, is on his staff. The Falcons will win but not on the scale of last year.....Defensive backs Anthony Wright and Josh Hall have minor injuries and may not play. I would not force Wright into the lineup. BYU is next week and they will need him more against the Cougars...And while Troy Calhoun says they will hold nothing back in this game, I guarantee you we will see nothing fancy from the Falcon Offense or Defense........So BYU has made the decision and will go independent in Football. If I am a coach or player in any of their 18 other sports I am not happy. Because in essence, the administration said "You're not as important to us as football, so suffer with what we stick you with." Many, but not all, will wind up competing in the West Coast Conference. BYU may get some more TV money from ESPN, but if this was a ploy to receive special consideration from the BCS it won't work. Look, in the last 6 years its been TCU and Utah that have led the charge on the front door of the BCS, not BYU. And with most bowls having affiliations with conferences, what post season game do you play in if your record qualifies for a 13th game? BYU could look back on this move with regret in a few short years......Hey don't forget, bring your radios to Saturdays opener against Northwestern State and listen to your hometown coverage on KVOR. We will be on the air at 10am with the First Command Financial Services Pregame Show. And throughout the season you can win tickets to all Air Force home games by clicking on this link http://kvor.com//customform.asp?id=59180&view=scheduled for a chance to pick up some ducats. One more reminder-The first Troy Calhoun Show is Thursday Night September 2nd at 630 at Colorado Mountain Brewery on Interqwest. Cornerback Anthony Wright is out with an undisclosed injury, but I don't think its serious. He could be held out of the Northwestern State game and the Falcons would still be fine. Wide Receivers Kevin Fogler and Nate Kauth have worn the red injury jersey, and linebacker Brady Amack was dinged up a bit, but all now are fine.

Speed. The Falcons have a lot of it on offense. Asher Clark, Jonathen Warzeka, Cody Getz, Kyle Haldrerman, Dontae Strickland, Mikell Hunter, Darius Jones. Plenty of speed on the edge for the Falcons. Big Play Speed.

I would be very surprised if Tim Jefferson is not starting at QB for the Falcons September 4th. He has had a solid camp, especially throwing the ball. My little voice tells me the Falcons will throw more this year. But I also do expect to see Connor Dietz play. And the Falcons have moved Defensive Back Ben Cochran back to quarterback. He is a heck of an athlete, and may see time on special times, or perhaps even on defense in a dime package.

We would love for you to join us at Falcon Stadium. Makes a lot of sense to me. He knows who his starters are both on offense and defense. Many of the scrimmage type situations have featured underclassmen, getting the chance of impress the coaches. The veterans can help them during the scrimmages, and as an added bonus they save their legs just a bit. Beginning Monday August 23rd you will see more of a focus on the 1st and 2nd string with the season opener lurking September 4th.

I talked to cornerback Anthony Wright the other day at practice. He was the only defensive back not wearing gloves. I asked him about that. he said its just a feel thing. He told me last year he did not wear gloves in 2 games. Its just how he feels going into games.

The BYU Thing.... All is quiet in Provo as the Cougars mull taking their football team independent, and playing the rest of their sports out of another conference. It sounds like The WAC and BYU had talked and all 8 schools, outside of Boise State, would welcome the Cougars in for Basketball and other sports. But when the Mountain West announced Fresno State and Nevada as new league members, BYU's plan suddenly lost a lot of air. It left the WAC scrambling for its life. And BYU is on the clock. If they want to go independent for 2011 they must give the Mountain West notice by September 1st. I think its an image thing as much as it is a money thing, although as an independent they get to keep all their bowl money rather than split it with conference teams. And make no mistake about it-they're still miffed that Utah got all the attention and a PAC 10 invite. It left the Cougars standing and stomping and demanding, "What about us?"

Welcome

Hi. My name is Jim Arthur. I am the Play By Play voice for the Air Force Football Team. Throughout the 2010 season I will give you my thoughts on players, games strategies and more as the Falcons begin what may be their most difficult season in many years.

Thoughts: I believe Tim Jefferson will start at quarterback even though Troy Calhoun has yet to name a starter. TJ looked so strong when he was healthy last year, which wasn't that often. But he clearly is faster and stronger so far this year and throwing the ball better. What I believe Air Force needs more of from TJ is rushing yards. He only averaged 24 yards a game rushing for the Falcons last year. I think that's why Troy Calhoun is so intrigued with backup Connor Dietz. He came on when Jefferon went down with his injuries and played well. He is an average passer, but a better runner than Jefferson. Dietz averaged 52 yards a game, and 5.1 yards a carry. The option works best when the QB, Fullback and Tailback are all threats to break one. While Calhoun may be hesitant to use a 2 QB system don't be surprised to see Dietz get some snaps because of his ability to run the football.

Quick Reminder: Saturday is Air Force Kids Day. The Falcons practice at Falcon Stadium from 930 to 1130am which is open to the public. Then kids can come on the field and get autographs and pictures with Air Force players and coaches. The Bird and the AF Cheerleaders will also be there. It free for everybody.

Welcome!

Hello, as promised we've launched the new Air Force Blog! We're just weeks away from the start of another exciting season of football. Check back often, and click to follow the blog. It's a great way to stay up-to-date and follow your favorite team.
