Counting Down

Word out of Atlanta is Georgia Tech Quarterback Joshua Nesbitt has still not been cleared to play in the Independence Bowl because of his broken arm. He was hurt November 4th. Clearly they are a different team without him in the lineup. If the Falcons can take away Anthony Allen, their leading ground gainer Tech will have trouble. They do not throw the ball well at all. Tech lost 4 of their last 5 and have lost 5 straight bowl games.....For The Falcons, at their last Colorado Springs practice Kevin Fogler, Brian Lindsey and Jared Tew all practiced. Getting Lindsey back would be huge because the strong safeties for both defenses are the keys to the game. They are not accounted for in option blocking schemes...Back to the offense. when Tech does throw the ball its basic stuff and they do not tend to stretch a defense. Air Force has a more complicated passing scheme and will throw deep. That might be the difference in the game. I like Air Force 31-20.

Happy Holidays

Here We Go

Air Force and Georgia Tech at the Independence Bowl!!!!! Gotta love it. Not surprised at all. It makes perfect sense. Two options teams. No secrets. Paul Johnson, the Tech coach, was head coach at Navy and really started the turnaround with the Midshipmen. And here is the fun part. There is no love lost between Air Force and Johnson. I would not call it bad blood, however, Johnson is no fan of the Falcons, and visa versa.

After the Falcons dispatched UNLV 35-20 to finish the regular season emotions were high in the Air Force Lockeroom. 8-4 is a good season, and with a break here or there it could have been 10-2 and even 11-1. But you are what you are, and for Air Force that means bowl bound. Sounds like the Falcons will be headed to the Independence Bowl and could meet Clemson, or even Georgia Tech, which would be a great match up since the former Navy Coach Paul Johnson coaches the Ramblin Wreck. But there was some talk the Falcons could wind up back in Las Vegas to face Notre Dame. The chance is slight, but if the Fighting Irish lose to USC they would finish 6-6. The thinking is the PAC-10 who has a berth in the Vegas bowl, may not have enough teams eligible for a bowl. Notre Dame would slide in. They would love to face Air Force in this game. Again the chances are slight, but ya never know. That would be a fun game, as would an Air Force Georgia Tech match up in the Independence Bowl. So don't book tickets anywhere just yet.

Tues 11-16-10

Nice win by the Falcons Saturday. They did what they had to against an inferior team. Got up big, and kept New Mexico at arms length. They meet a similar team Thursday night with UNLV. Air Force may play the game without QB Tim Jefferson and WR Jonathen Warzka. Jefferson suffered a broken nose Saturday. He could have played after they cleaned it up, but I thought Troy Calhoun made a good decision to get Connor Diets in there. Dietz looked strong. He completed 5-6 passes on a late first half scoring drive and generally handled the offense well. I would keep TJ on the bench and go with Dietz Thursday night. Jonathen Warzeka suffered a concussion. With a Thursday game it might be too soon for him to be cleared to play. He too should take the night off.

The Falcons with a win would finish 8-4. Pretty solid. And with a break here or there they could have posted 9 or 10 wins. But, in coaching parlance, let's just focus on Thursday night. Our coverage on KVOR begins at 6. The kickoff from Sam Boyd stadium is set for 8pm

A great, great win Saturday by the Falcons at Army. The Black Knights jumped out with 2 quick field goals and I said during one of the commercial breaks we got em right where we want them. You knew Air Force would come back. The biggest play of the game had nothing to do with interceptions, or fumble recoveries or even touchdowns-it was the 3rd down and 21 yard run by Nate Walker in the 2nd quarter. He got the 21 yards for the first down, setting up Tim Jefferson's first touchdown run. It was a huge play. Also, don't overlook the return of nose guard Ryan Gardner. He was a BIG factor in the Falcons slowing down the Army rushing attack. Troy Calhoun said afterwards they are a different team with Gardner in there and he played his tail off. And How bout Quarterback Tim Jefferson. he got his bell rung a few times but he was HUGE in this contest. he does what a leader has to do when times are tough-he gutted it out on a bit of a gimpy knee and played one heck of a game. That Commander In Chiefs Trophy has a case waiting for it in Colorado Springs. Home Sweet Home

2 games left in the season. Saturday at home against New Mexico and Next Thursday at UNLV. More on that later in the week.

That was a heck of a football game Saturday against Utah. The Falcons, even giving up 5 turnovers, were still in the game. Utah had to make 2 huge 4th down stops and credit to them they did. That's what championship teams do. The Falcons found a way to climb back into it. That too, is what championship teams do. And as much as that loss to the Utes hurt, its time to get ready for Army. The last time the Commander In Chiefs trophy graced the halls of the Academy was 2002. This upcoming game has some fascinating story lines. The Black Knights are a much, much better football team, and are 1 win away from being bowl eligible. This could be the year Army beats both Air Force and Navy and wins the trophy themselves. An Air Force win gets the Falcons bowl eligible, brings the trophy back,  and wipes away the longest losing streak in Troy Calhouns tenure in Colorado Springs. And it sets Air Force up for a potential 8 win regular season with struggling New Mexico and UNLV left in the season. But this game Saturday will be just as tough for the Falcons as Utah, Oklahoma and San Diego State were. It always has been. But this time, there is so much more riding on it.

Not a good weekend for the good guys. It's easy to see why TCU is ranked 4th this week in the BCS standings. To my eye they are better than Oklahoma. Now for the Falcons, they have to re-group and get ready for Utah. Oh yeah, the Utes are 8th in this weeks BCS standings. But the game is at Falcon Stadium and the Air Force-Utah series has produced some great games over the years both here and in Salt Lake City. But Air Force will have to play better. I thought the last two games the Falcons did not tackle as well as they had earlier this year. And, with Jared Tew out with his broken leg, they have to find more ways to get Kyle Halderman and Jonathen Warzeka involved, which may mean they need to throw more. I was surprised they only tried 7 passes after falling behind at TCU. Bring your radios to Saturdays game and listen to us live on Colorado's 740 KVOR.

Its a tall order when fully healthy for any football team to go into Fort Worth and beat TCU. Air Force is without fullback Jared Tew and wide receivers Kevin Fogler and Zac Kauth. And on defense the Falcons are missing safety Brian Lindsey and defensive lineman Ryan Gardner, Ben Kopacka and Wiley Wickstrom. Without Tew in the lineup I expect TCU's defense to try and take away the pitch game to Asher Clark. I believe they feel they can keep Tim Jefferson and Nathan Walker under control. Sounds like Kyle Halderman could move to the wide receiver spot to replace Kauth. I feel The Falcons will need big games from Halderman and Jonathen Warzeka to have a shot at TCU. On defense Air Force has to tackle better than they did last week against Ronnie Hillman at San Diego State. The problem is at TCU all their backs and wide receivers run like Ronnie Hillman. The Horned Frogs offense is averaging 40 points a game, and their defense is giving up 9 points a game and 1, yes 1 point a game in conference matchups. If the Falcons have a shot at winning it has to be a low scoring game. And they can't let TCU jump out early, otherwise it could be a tough hill to climb. We're lie Saturday afternoon at 4 with Falcono Football Saturday and we kick things off from Amon G Carter Stadium at 6 on Colorado's 740 KVOR.

That was not a pretty game against San Diego State Saturday night. The Aztecs are better, and played well, but the Falcons didn't help their own cause. A clip on a Kyle Halderman touchdown catch, An Eric Sodaberg miss from 46 yards. Going for 2 on the Falcons first touchdown and having all sorts of confusion on the call from the bench-the decision to go for 2 to begin with, although I thought it was a good decision. And lastly the injuries to fullback Jared Tew and wide receiver Zac Kauth. It all added up to a bad, bad night all around. And now, whats next for Air Force? They play at TCU Saturday and have not played well in Fort Worth against TCU in recent memory. The Horned Frogs have team speed everywhere. Hell, even the water boys fly on and off the field. And The Horned Frogs are 5th in the BCS and have tons and tons to play for. Not that Air Force doesn't, but you know what I mean.

Later this week I'll talk more about the rushing game without Jared Tew, and the wide receiver picture with Zac Kauth going down.

The good news is Air Force is 5-1 and 3-0 in the Mountain West Conference after beating Colorado State. However things figure to get a tad more interesting in the next few weeks. The Falcons had 3 players go down with injuries Saturday. They lost safety Brian Lindsey to a broken clavicle for the rest of the year. He was really playing well. PJ Adeji Paul will take his place. Air Force also lost defensive linemen Ryan Gardner with a groin pull and Ben Kopacka to a knee injury. Both will miss several games. The other concern is teams have moved the ball on the ground against Air Force, teams that have not run well the entire season. Colorado State and Wyoming both had success against the Falcons rush defense. And Saturday they meet the leading rusher in the conference, Ronnie Hillman from San Diego State. He was held in check somewhat by BYU Saturday-The Aztecs, by the way, had the ball for only 15 minutes in that game-WOW, yet only lost by 3.

Other thoughts-Pick Your Poison-Do you stop Tim Jefferson, or Asher Clark, or Jared Tew? Tough call for Rocky Long the Aztecs defensive coordinator. Thats his task Saturday. The former Lobo head coach has seen the option for a long time. I wonder what he will do to try and slow it down...How bout Jonathen Warzeka. 2-100 yard Kickoff returns for touchdowns in his career and he is still only a junior? They won't kick to him Saturday. The Falcons will have to be creative to make sure he gets the ball.

Looks like the Falcons will be without linebacker Brady Amack for this weekends game with Colorado State. He suffered a pretty bad ankle injury last week and could be out a while......The Rams have struggled this year rushing the football, averaging a bit more than 50 yards a game on the ground. They have really relied on their young quarterback Pete Thomas, and will probably have to do so again this weekend. Expect the Falcons to thrown a ton of defensive looks at him......The schedule does not get any easier following CSU.-At a very, very, very improved San Diego State next week, then TCU where the Falcons have struggled, then home against Utah.

Service Academy Football-once again on display Saturday at Falcon Stadium.  Air Force and Navy know each other so well. No surprises, so all you see is just hard hitting, gritty football. There was more pressure on Air Force in this game than I can remember in recent times. They hid it well, but the Midshipmen losing streak hung like an albatross on the Falcons. But Air Force didn't play like it, and that's why they won. They cut down on mistakes from previous weeks, and remained patient, and found a way to beat Navy 14-6. It was finally the Falcons that made a few more plays than the Midshipmen. This series has been so close over the years. I thought it was critical that Air Force get, and play with the lead, which they have hardly done in the last 4 games. A lot of heroes Saturday, but 3 stood out. Tim Jefferson, finally healthy, has been very good this year and was again yesterday with two td runs. Linebacker Jordan Waiwaiole played the game of his life with 15 tackles and the key interception with under 30 seconds to go. And how bout the freshman Jamil Cooks who blocked two kicks. He's got the makings of a very very special player for the Falcons.

The victory pushed Air Force into the top 25. They are ranked 25th in writers poll.

Had an Air Force fan say to me last night he thought this was the biggest game for the Falcons in DECADES!!!!!!! Thought about that for a while and he might be right. An Air Force win over Navy gets the 7 year monkey off the Falcons back. And it really sets them up for the potential of a BIG Season. Should the Midshipmen win, its another year of losing to Navy and now having to forget it and gear up for a difficult second half of the season. Talked to Troy Calhoun Thursday night and he said this might be the toughest schedule the Falcons have had in years. For Troy to say that is significant because he never looks ahead. But he's right. Next week an in-state rival Colorado State, then off to face much, much improved San Diego State. Then to Fort Worth to battle TCU and home at the end of October to face Utah.

Keys to Saturdays game...The Falcons defense must stop Navy on 3rd down. If they keep the ball for 6-7 minutes Navy will have the advantage...The health of Navy QB Ricky Dobbs. Has had a bum ankle. Said this week he was 91 percent (yes, 91 percent-love that from a service academy kid)..And the Falcons can't hurt themselves- Can't miss a field goal, give up a blocked punt, stupid penalties. What worries you is Air Force has battled those demons at times this year.

It wasn't pretty, but it was a good, good win by Air Force at Wyoming. Why? Good football teams have to win games when they don't have their best stuff. The Falcons at times were just bad on Saturday. Penalties, a missed field goal, a field goal try with a bad snap, a fake punt that didn't work. However, when crunch time hit, the Falcons turned it on. A 16 play drive and a 14 play drive in the 4th quarter both resulted in touchdowns. Wyoming had the ball for only 9 minutes in the 2nd half. The Air Force defense shut down Running Back Alvester Alexander and  Quarterback Austin Carta Samuels. And they got two big turnovers from Jon Davis, who has been named the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
The Falcon defense has not given up a point in the 4th quarter through 4 games this season. At the same time if these mistakes keep up they will cost the Falcons a game. The other thing you had to like was the rushing of Tim Jefferson. He is averaging over 6 yards a carry this year. Last year he only averaged 3.4. I asked him about it Saturday and he smiled and said, "I'm healthy this year,"

Jon Davis told me Reggie Rembert was talking to a Wyoming Wide receiver during the game. Reggie asked him, "why aren't you throwing more? The receiver looked at Reggie and said, "because of your secondary, that's why."

Air Force lost Wide Receiver Ken Fogler to a knee injury. He could miss the rest of the season. That could hurt because Fogler was so good at getting deep into the secondary.

Athletic Director Dr. Hans Mueh confirmed to KVOR Air Force will play At Notre Dame next year. That game will replace BYU on the schedule. The Fighting Irish are expected to play Air Force in Colorado Springs in 2013.

Much More to come this week as the Falcons focus on Navy. The Midshipmen were off last Saturday, giving them more time to get ready for the Falcons.

Injury update...WR Kevin Fogler may miss the Wyoming game Saturday. He was hit in the head against Oklahoma and he might have a concussion.....Linebacker Harrison McWilliams has a shoulder injury and is not expected to play.....I have a feeling this game Saturday will not be close-How bout AF 37 Wyoming 13-Just a feeling......Wyoming's running game is bad, and their 3rd down percentage conversion rate is poor. That puts a lot of pressure on their QB Austin Carta-Samuels. If the Falcons can keep him in check they should be okay....I see a big day for the Air Force Offense. They have not been stopped yet and they should move the football Saturday.........Because BYU is leaving next year the Falcons have to fill one more game on their schedule. Don't be surprised if its a big name-a real big name.

What Might Have Been

Not many people gave Air Force a chance against #7 Oklahoma Saturday in Norman. The Sooners had the nations longest winning streak at 32 games. They were ranked 7th in the nation and have big guys all over the field. However, this is why they play the games. The Falcons matched the Sooners yard for yard and hit for hit and came thisclose to winning. Oklahoma's offense is incredible. They have redefined the standard for running the no huddle. But Air Force adjusted, got their running game going, and showed an enormous amount of heart, guts and determination. I can count on one the hand the number of teams in the nation, that after being down 27-10 going into the fourth quarter, that would have the strength to make a game of it in Norman.  But it's still a loss. There were no moral victories. The players were bitterly disappointed because they realized how close they came to winning. This game will help the Falcons the rest of this season. This club has a lot of weapons. Their chance of winning the Mountain West Conference title actually improved Saturday because they understand how good they can be and how far they can go.

Talked to Falcons head Coach Troy Calhoun this morning. Asked about injuries to Jared Tew and Asher Clark. It sounds like Clark is very questionable for Oklahoma. Calhoun said it could be a week before he's back on the field. He really didn't comment on Tew. I do know both players are on the travel roster and are SCHEDULED to go to Oklahoma. But that could change of course. We've seen coaching "gamesmenship" when it comes to injuries, so stay tuned. Both could play and then again, maybe not. Clark has a bum ankle and Tew a very sore and bruised hand.

Really looking forward to watching the Oklahoma offense vs the Air Force defense. If the Sooners get going early don't panic. The Falcons are one of the best teams in the nation at making adjustments. Its a 60 minute game. Let's see how it plays out.

Kickoff is 130 Saturday and its live on Colorado's 740 KVOR.

Just got off the phone with Oklahoma Coach Bob Stoops. We talked about the Oklahoma passing offense against the Air Force Defense. I think this could be the key to the game. The Sooner receivers are lightning quick, and their Quarterback Landry Jones is coming up a big time performance against Florida State. The Falcons will have to limit yards after the catch and give Jones a bunch of different looks.

Air Force brings more offensive weapons into this game than they have had in years. The Sooner defense only has 3 days to get ready for them. Should be fun to watch

Injuries...Asher Clark has a sprained ankle. Won't know til later in the week if the running back will play. And also, fullback Jared Tew has a badly bruised hand. He too could be questionable for Saturdays game. The Falcons need both of them to have a shot in Norman.

Biggest win of the Calhoun Era

Our Air Force Blog is brought to you by 5 Star Bank at www.5starbankus.com

By Jim Arthur

Wow...Although I was not surprised. The Falcons 35-14 win over BYU Saturday has to go down as the biggest win in the Troy Calhoun era. He won't admit it, but I saw it on his face in the locker room after the game Saturday.  The Falcons were simply terrific on both sides of the ball and on special teams. Football is a game of adjustments and over the last 3 years Air Force teams have been excellent in making changes as the game develops. The defense was outstanding as they adjusted to the running of Quarterback Riley Nelson. They once again showed their ability to force turnovers, getting 3, 2 fumbles and an interception. After the 1st quarter the Falcons gave up just 126 yards of offense. And it was a total team effort....On offense, the Falcons showed they could pretty much do what they wanted. The offensive line punished the BYU defenders with over 400 yards on the ground. Asher Clark ran hard and was durable in his 100 yard plus effort. And again, the Falcons showed their big play capabilities with Jonathen Warzeka and the emerging Sophomore Mikell Hunter who already has 3 touchdowns in 2 games. And Calhouns 4th down and 2 call in the 2nd half was huge. He has been gutsy since day 1 going for it on 4th down, and Warzekas run for 6 was a back breaker.

Looking ahead... A lot of people noticed the win. The Falcons received votes in both the AP and Coaches poll, and with the victory they sit atop the conference at 1-0.......Next-Oklahoma, Saturday in Norman. The Sooners, after a closer then expected opening week victory over Utah State, pounded Florida State Saturday. But they won't have many days to get ready for the Falcons option. I expect a close game, and a low scoring game, say 13-10. Who wins? Find out Saturday at 130. Watch the game on TV and turn the volume down for your hometown coverage on Colorado's 740 KVOR.

Our Air Force Blog is brought to you by 5 Star Bank at www.5starbankus.com.  Reggie Rembert update-The cornerback was on the practice field Wednesday in a non contact red jersey. I think he will play Saturday. He suffered a neck injury in the win over Northwestern State and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher. He went to the hospital for tests and was back at the stadium after the game. I actually talked with him. He was with his family, and relieved his injury wasn't serious. The Academy has put him through a battery of tests already. They will make a decision on his ability to play Saturday Morning......BYU Coach Bronco Mendenhall told me he would love to continue to play Air Force after BYU leaves the Mountain West. He loves what the Academy stands for and the young men that go there....Could be a high scoring game on Saturday. I think BYU will have trouble with the Air Force Offense, and I think the Falcons will throw the ball a bit more than anyone expects....Anthony Wright was dinged up a bit last week but the cornerback will start and play..Defensive Lineman Wylie Wickstrom is out for perhaps the rest of the season with a torn knee ligament. That will hurt the Air Force depth on the defensive line....Final thought-If the Falcons win Saturday they can go back to last week and the scare Northwestern State gave them. It woke them up, and they realized you can't sleepwalk through anybody. 1-0.....But.......

The Falcons did what they needed to do Saturday-win. While it wasn't pretty it will make them a better football team and here's why. I don't care who you are, trying to get up emotionally to play a game against Northwestern State is hard. And to the Demons credit they gave Air Force a game. Love their QB Paul Harris. He is a winner. At halftime the Falcons trudged into the locker room and as the players used to say about Fisher Deberry, "We heard some words they don't use in church on Sunday." A solid second half followed. This is a good wake up call.

Thoughts: I didn't think the Falcons defense put enough pressure on Harris in the first half. They blitzed more in the second half and switched up their coverages......Liked how Tim Jefferson played. He ran for two td's and threw for two. He told me afterwards he is feeling much more confident and it shows.....Bad news about losing Wylie Wikstrom to a pretty severe knee injury. We'll now see more of Bradley Connor and Caleb Koneman up front on the defensive line. Air Force looked strong on Kickoff return and punt return. Can they carry that through the rest of the season?.......Talked to Reggie Rembert after the game. He took that huge hit in the first quarter and had to be taken off on a stretcher. They released from the hospital late in the game and he was in the locker room as I was leaving. He was laughing and looked as if nothing had happened. He said he would be fine. But he will have to undergo a battery of tests for him to play this weekend.....Northwestern State moved the ball through the air against the Falcons, and look who's coming to town this week. BYU. Defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstedt will have to correct some things, and definitely bring more pressure earlier against QB's Riley Nelson and Jake Heaps. Both played in the win over Washington.....Saturdays game, in my opinion, is the biggest game in the Troy Calhoun era....More on that later this week. Here We Go

Kvor's Air Force blog is sponsored by 5 Star Bank.

Game Week.....Northwestern State...Some observations-this game will not be 72-0 like it was against Nichols State last year. Bradley Dale Peaveto the Demons coach was co-defensive coordinator at LSU when the tigers shut down Georgia Tech and their option attack in the Chick Fil-A bowl in 2009 38-3. Also, former Nichols State Coach Jay Thomas who faced Air Force last year, is on his staff. The Falcons will win but not on the scale of last year.....Defensive backs Anthony Wright and Josh Hall have minor injuries and may not play. I would not force Wright into the lineup. BYU is next week and they will need him more against the Cougars...And while Troy Calhoun says they will hold nothing back in this game, I guarantee you we will see nothing fancy from the Falcon Offense or Defense........So BYU has made the decision and will go independent in Football. If I am a coach or player in any of their 18 other sports I am not happy. Because in essence, the administration said "You're not as important to us as football, so suffer with what we stick you with." Many, but not all, will wind up competing in the West Coast Conference. BYU may get some more TV money from ESPN, but if this was a ploy to receive special consideration from the BCS it won't work. Look, in the last 6 years its been TCU and Utah that have led the charge on the front door of the BCS, not BYU. And with most bowls having affiliations with conferences, what post season game do you play in if your record qualifies for a 13th game? News....

Air Force has sidestepped serious injuries so far in camp. Cornerback Anthony Wright is out with an undisclosed injury, but I don't think its serious. He could be held out of the Northwestern State game and the Falcons would still be fine. Wide Receivers Kevin Fogler and Nate Kauth have worn the red injury jersey, and linebacker Brady Amack was dinged up a bit, but all now are fine.

Speed. The Falcons have a lot of it on offense. Asher Clark, Jonathen Warzeka, Cody Getz, Kyle Haldrerman, Dontae Strickland, Mikell Hunter, Darius Jones. Plenty of speed on the edge for the Falcons. Big Play Speed.

I would be very surprised if Tim Jefferson is not starting at QB for the Falcons September 4th. He has had a solid camp, especially throwing the ball. My little voice tells me the Falcons will throw more this year. But I also do expect to see Connor Dietz play. And the Falcons have moved Defensive Back Ben Cochran back to quarterback. He is a heck of an athlete, and may see time on special times, or perhaps even on defense in a dime package.

We would love for you to join us at Falcon Stadium. Click on this link for a chance to win tickets from Colorado's 740 KVOR. http://kvor.com//customform.asp?id=59180&view=scheduled We'll draw names before every home game. And when you come out, bring your radio for your hometown coverage on KVOR.

Reps

Air Force Coach Troy Calhoun told me he is giving a lot of his younger guys plenty of reps during the first 3 weeks of practice. Makes a lot of sense to me. He knows who his starters are both on offense and defense. Many of the scrimmage type situations have featured underclassmen, getting the chance of impress the coaches. The veterans can help them during the scrimmages, and as an added bonus they save their legs just a bit. Beginning Monday August 23rd you will see more of a focus on the 1st and 2nd string with the season opener lurking September 4th.

I talked to cornerback Anthony Wright the other day at practice.  He was the only defensive back not wearing gloves. I asked him about that. he said its just a feel thing. He told me last year he did not wear gloves in 2 games. Its just how he feels going into games.

The BYU Thing.... All is quiet in Provo as the Cougars mull taking their football team independent, and playing the rest of their sports out of another conference. It sounds like The WAC and BYU had talked and all 8 schools, outside of Boise State, would welcome the Cougars in for Basketball and other sports. But when the Mountain West announced Fresno State and Nevada as new league members, BYU's plan suddenly lost a lot of air. It left the WAC scrambling for its life. And BYU is on the clock. If they want to go independent for 2011 they must give the Mountain West notice by September 1st. I think its an image thing as much as it is a money thing, although as an independent they get to keep all their bowl money rather than split it with conference teams. And make no mistake about it-they're still miffed that Utah got all the attention and a PAC 10 invite. It left the Cougars standing and stomping and demanding, "What about us?"

Welcome

Hi. My name is Jim Arthur. I am the Play By Play voice for the Air Force Football Team. Throughout the 2010 season I will give you my thoughts on players, games strategies and more as the Falcons begin what  may be their most difficult season in many years.

Thoughts: I believe Tim Jefferson will start at quarterback even though Troy Calhoun has yet to name a starter. TJ looked so strong when he was healthy last year, which wasn't that often. But he clearly is faster and stronger so far this year and throwing the ball better. What I believe Air Force needs more of from TJ is rushing yards. He only averaged 24 yards a game rushing for the Falcons last year. I think that's why Troy Calhoun is so intrigued with backup Connor Dietz. He came on when Jefferon went down with his injuries and played well. He is an average passer, but a better runner than Jefferson. Dietz averaged 52 yards a game, and 5.1 yards a carry. The option works best when the QB, Fullback and Tailback are all threats to break one. While Calhoun may be hesitant to use a 2 QB system don't be surprised to see Dietz get some snaps because of his ability to run the football.

Quick Reminder: Saturday is Air Force Kids Day. The Falcons practice at Falcon Stadium from 930 to 1130am which is open to the public. Then kids can come on the field and get autographs and pictures with Air Force players and coaches. The Bird and the AF Cheerleaders will also be there. It free for everybody.
